Pentecost Sunday
Processional Hymn - 552 - Send Us Your Spirit
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Come to us, Spirit of God.
Breathe in us now.
We sing together.
Spirit of hope and of light, fill our lives.
Come to us, Spirit of God.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Fill us with the fire of your love.
Burn in us now.
Bring us together.
Come to us; dwell in us,
Change our lives, O Lord.
Come to us, Spirit of God.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Send us the wings of new birth.
Fill all the earth with the love you have taught us.
Let all creation now be shaken with love.
Come to us, Spirit of God.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit,
Renew the face of the earth.
First Reading - Acts 2:1-11
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his native language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”
Responsorial Psalm - Psalm 104
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
How manifold are your works, O LORD!
The earth is full of your creatures.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
If you take away their breath, they die and they return to their dust.
When you send forth your Spirit of life, they are created in your sight.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
May his glory last for all time; may the LORD be glad in his works!
Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
Second Reading - 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13
Brothers and sisters:
No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.
As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
Sequence - Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Holy Spirit, Lord Divine,
Come, from heights of heav’n and shine,
Come, with blessed radiance bright!
Come, O Father of the poor,
Come, whose treasured gifts endure,
Come, our heart’s unfailing light!
Of consolers, wisest, best,
And our soul’s most welcome guest,
Sweet refreshment, sweet repose;
In our labor, rest most sweet;
pleasant coolness in the heat;
Consolation in our woes.
Light most blessed shine with grace
In our heart’s most secret place,
Fill your faithful through and through!
Left without your presence here,
Life itself would disappear,
Nothing thrives apart from you.
Cleanse our soiled hearts of sin,
Arid souls refresh within,
Wounded lives to health restore.
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the wayward home once more!
On the faithful, who are true
And profess their faith in you,
In your sevenfold gift descend;
Give us virtue’s sure reward;
Give us your salvation, Lord;
Give us joys that never end. Amen.
Alleluia.
Gospel - John 14:15-16, 23b-26
Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.
“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
“Those who do not love me do not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.
“I have told you this while I am with you.
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”
Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish
Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.
Offertory Hymn - 556 - Come Down, O Love Divine
Come down, O Love divine,
Seek now this soul of mine,
And visit it with your own ardor glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, your holy flame bestowing.
O let it freely burn,
Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let your glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
And so the yearning strong,
With which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the pow’r of human telling;
No soul can guess Love’s grace,
Till it become the place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling
Communion Hymn - 555 - Spirit Blowing Through Creation
Spirit blowing through creation,
Spirit burning in the sky,
Let the hope of Your salvation fill our eyes;
God of splendor, God of glory,
You who light the stars above,
All the heavens tell the story
Of Your love.
As you moved upon the waters,
As you ride upon the wind,
Move us all, your sons and daughters deep within;
As you shape the hills and mountains,
Formed the land and filled the deep,
Let your hand renew and waken all who sleep.
Spirit renewing the earth,
Renewing the hearts of all people;
Burn in the weary souls,
Blow through the silent lips,
Come now awake us, Spirit of God.
Love that sends the rivers dancing,
Love that waters all that lives,
Love that heals and holds and rouses and forgives.
You are food for all creatures,
You are hunger in the soul,
In Your hands, the brokenhearted are made whole.
All the creatures you have fashioned,
All that live and breathe in you,
Find their hope in your compassion, strong, and true;
You, O Spirit of salvation,
You alone, beneath, above,
Come, renew your whole creation in your love.
Spirit renewing the earth,
Renewing the hearts of all people;
Burn in the weary souls,
Blow through the silent lips,
Come now awake us, Spirit of God.
Communion Meditation Hymn - 559 - Come Holy Ghost
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
And in our hearts take up thy rest;
Come with thy grace and heav’nly aid
To fill the hearts which thou hast made;
To fill the hearts which thou hast made.
O Comforter, to thee we cry,
Thou heav’nly gift of God most high;
Thou font of life and fire of love,
And sweet anointing from above;
And sweet anointing from above.
O Holy Ghost, through thee alone,
Know we the Father and the Son;
Be this our firm unchanging creed,
That thou dost from them both proceed,
That thou dost from them both proceed.
Praise we the Lord, Father and Son,
And Holy Spirit, with them one;
And may the Son on us bestow
All gifts that from the Spirit flow;
All gifts that from the Spirit flow.
Recessional Hymn - 557 - Send Down the Fire
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit, breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to be your compassion,
Teach us the song of your love;
Give us hearts that sing,
Give us deeds that ring,
Make us ring with the song of your love.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit, breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to learn of your mercy,
Teach us the way of your peace;
Give us hearts that feel,
Give us hands that heal,
Make us walk in the way of your peace.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit, breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to answer oppression,
Teach us the fire of your truth;
Give us righteous souls,
'Til your justice rolls,
make us burn with the fire of your truth.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit, breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to witness your Kingdom,
Give us the presence of Christ;
May your holy light
Keep us shining bright,
Ever shine with the presence of Christ.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit, breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.
